My dad gave me a roll of quartes from "Sometime in the '80s".

I asked him why he saved it and he told me he heard about some kind of error or something...

He really didnt know what it was.

Where there any errors on quarters in the 80s?
Would it hurt to open it?

Did they have plastic wrappers in the 80's, I thought those were recent?

There is no good reason to not open it as it is just a regular roll of quarters at this point. Errors can occur randomly in any year and most good errors won't even fit in a roll. As for varieties, there are a few minor doubled dies and one RPM(1989-D).

I did find reference to the "error" your dad might have been referring to. In 1989, some quarters were discovered without a mintmark. A frenzy ensued and interest soared with huge prices being attached to these quarters. Then the Mint debunked the error, attributing the missing mintmark to a clogged die, and that oddity faded back into obscurity.

With any luck, that roll will have some nice BU 1982P&D, 1983P&D, or 1986P&D quarters. All of them have seen nice gains in value and nice ones can be tough to find.
