I have a 1697 Continental French Bronze medal by J Mauger. The medal is commemorating the capture of Barcelona. The obverse is a bust of Louis XIV. The reverse is Hercules leaning on his club, the shield of the city of Barcelona lying at his feet. The Legend reads: Binis Castris Deletis (Two hostile camps defeated); and Barcino Capta (Barcelona taken). The year reads M-DCXCVII.

But what's up with the edge/rim? It looks like it's been painstakingly hammered.

Has anyone ever seen this before?

Thanks!

For some odd reason it looks like some one took a hammer to it. That's too bad. Otherwise it's a nice medal.

some one took a lot of time and effort to make the rim....that alone should be worth something right

It looks like it took a lot of time and intention to me too, guppie1160. My uncle speculates the coin was picked up in Europe during WWII and either there (like trench art) or later here in the US, was carefully hammered or machine lathed to preserve a relatively even edge/rim.

Being new to all of this I wondered if that was a fad at some time in the coin community?

Thanks to everyone for their input!!
