Looking for a good digital camera to photograph coins I found a used one for $210. It's a Canon digital rebel DSLR 1GB CF. It's still available and seems like a good deal, just not sure if it's right for coin photography.

All I know so far is that it comes with a lens. No details about lens type.

Is that a Rebel XT? (350D) With the right lens, which you can add later, it's capable of absolutely professional results. The lens will cost north of $300. The kit 18-55 lens is OK, but not spectacular for coins. $210 is a good price for an XT, and a spectacular price for any succeeding model.

Keep in mind, though - with a camera like this, you commit to learning the underlying principles of photography.

I used to own that model. Its terrific. I have upgraded since.

If it comes with the stock zoom lens as per the picture (18-55mm) you will need a magnification filter. I got mine on ebay for about $15. This is a quick Chinese ad I found, http://cgi.ebay.com/58mm-58-mm-Macr...mera_Filters it will give you the gist, better to buy domestic. Note that the 58mm is the width of that particular lens. The filter screws on to the front of the lens and will let you get in really close. I have a 10 plus for tight details and a 4 plus I use for pennies.

I managed these with the stock 18-55 and my 450D:

It took a little doing, and a little postprocessing. The point is, even an entry-level dSLR with an unsuitable lens is an order of magnitude better than the best point-and-shoot. Not that you can't get great shots with the latter - some CCF members are proving this every day - but a dSLR makes everything much simpler. Except the simplicity.

i would think not a bad deal and like stated early defiantly capable of proffesional quality shots. I just looked at bhphoto.com for a macro for myself and found a canon for $265 that should do the trick, you can also get some a little cheaper but I really wouldn't go any lower than $200. might even be able to get a good used one on ebay, bhphoto.com also has a used section didn't get a chance to look there yet. you probably should also get a tripod and use the self timmer on the camera, now don't forget you will be able to use this camera for alot of other things to, and take care it and it will last you a very long time. I don't know much (next to nothing about coins) but I do know a thing or to about photography
