So I think we have all heard about them. Normally we aim at attaining the highest grade we can for a given piece. However, I've always heard that there some people out there that strive for the opposite end of the spectrum with a dated P01 as a best target.

My question, does anyone actually know of someone who does this? And why do they collect these sets?

I Imagine they collect it because there is something appealing about the "lost children" aspect.

I just thought it would be interesting to see what you all had to say.

I have a morgan low ball set and I just really like the look or a nice worn morgan. Very worn or MS-64 and higher are the two best grades for morgans. I would rather have an affordable set of worn morgans that look good together than a set of normal ones that are all different grades.

Yea, I do have to admit, worn Morgans are still very cool looking, and uniformity is always appealing.

I'll have to get my scanner hooked up, I've got some neat items that would qualify.

Perhaps it would be a real achievement to obtain a genuinely very worn British Churchill Crown. It is maybe the most unloved copper nickel crown of the late British pounds / shillings / pence series.

Quote: "There is no doubt many who would say that the beauty of the Churchill (crown) increases in direct proportion to the amount of wear it has sustained."
Ref: (Coincraft's 1998 Standard Catalogue of English and UK coins 1066 to date).

I normally don't like really lousy, excessively worn coins for a collection. However, not to long ago I started a collection that I never thought of previously. Liberty Head Half Dollars. So I decided to give them a try. The very first thing I noticed was the availability of those and the prices since all must be purchased. None will ever appear in change that's for sure. And the very cheapest ones are already in the 2 digit figures. $7, 8 or 9 dollars is already not possible so I went for the lowest grade I could afford. Now have all but 4 to complete the entire set and all in G-4 or less. Still all in all as long as they all appear to look similar, makes for some constant appearances.

If anyone has an ugly, worn, nasty Morgan that they really need to hate and it bothers them to own it so much they really need to get rid of it, send it to me. Morgan always has a friend at my house.

I'd show you the 1900 my wife's grandmother baked in a birthday cake for her but it would break my camera. Sel691 has the right idea, don't think of it as ugly, think of it as Character.

I like Napoleon's idea...there is something about uniformity. Not to mention that they're still 90% silver.

Low Ball sounds more like a poker game.
