My daughter brought me a 1912 lincoln wheat back penny that is silver in color. I showed it to some collectors at work and they said they didn't know what it was. They suggested I get on here and ask. Thanks for any help.

First, get an accurate weight. A normal Lincoln Wheat cent will weigh 3.1 grams. Second, pictures could certainly help Almost all cases of a silver appearance on a Lincoln cent(not counting 1943 steelies and 1982-present Zincolns) is due to post-mint alteration, usually plating. There are also rare off-metal errors that occur so that is a very slim possibility which is why you need a weight.

Right, if the coin is underweight, and weakly struck, it might have been made on a dime planchet.

I'd agree with the pople above who said to weigh it... but some other suggestions in case you don't have an accurate enough scale.

-look at it through a magnifying glass or loupe. Is there any flaking of the suurfaces, or do the date and mint mark show a buildup of "extra" material?

-hard to tell from that photo, but is it just oxidized or is it actually a silver color? Take a look at a pre-1964 silver dime/quarter/etc and compare the color.

It looks like someone galvanized it.If it were a dime planchet, it would be smaller and some of the written info would be right on the edge.

yup, someone altered it. It doesn't look like anything special (IMO).

I work with a guy who used to own a plating business. He said they plated cents all the time
and gave them to kids. My guess is the same thing here. Some one just cashed it in at the bank.

I agree with it being plated. I think it is still cool. If I found it I would keep it. Sadly it's not worth really anything but that doesn't mean it's not interesting.
