How hard do you all think it would be to gather up a type set of every denomination coin of every country for a particular year? I'm specifically thinking of my birth year - 1970. I would only be looking for circulating coinage - not commemoratives, proofs, or the like. Just the normal, everyday coins the average Joe would have. Doable on a reasonable budget?

It'd be a challenge but doable.
A lot of research, too

Adam, have you done something like that?

No, I thought about doing a U.S. Only set but not too much of a challenge for me.

Actually, Adam, you would have a lot more countries than I do. The Soviet Union had broken up - so you would have to do Russia plus all the little -stans. And even though you have the European Union - each country still issues their own coins.
Now I just need to start the research.

Waredu, that's an interesting project. Now if you had the CD of the Krause for 1901-2000 you could do a search for 1970, strip out all the proofs, commems etc and you'd have a list but it's gonna be a big one. I'd say yes doable but it may take you another 40 years.

Wouldn't be too difficult, maybe start by mapping the continents and then countries existed in that year. Once you start let me know, as I have some little forgotten african countries coins from that year that I can help you with.

I occasionally go through dealers junk boxes a their shop or at coin shows. You can have a lot of fun without spending too much money. There is one annoying problem though. I tend to search junk boxes at coin shows, because your fingers can get very and uncomfortably dirty. At least at the coin shows, you can clean up your hands in the rest room before eating your lunch!
This weekend 14th 15th Aug 2010, Sydney is having it's biggest coin show of the year. I'll be there. Not too far away Mercedes-Benz has had major rebuilding of their showroom and our car club (Merc) has been invited for a cocktail party, on the same day (14th) prior to our Concours de elegance. I have a 30 old W116 450SEL 6.9 litre Mercedes, which explains my forum name on this website. I'm looking forward to both.
If you type sel_69l into a Google search you may find a bit more about me on the Topklasse website and perhaps a picture of my car, attached to my forum name; I use the same name for both websites.

Actually, your idea sounds like fun! Work, but still fun. Just doing North America will be a challenge, Honduran, Nicaraguan, and Guatemalan coins were not made of the best metals and probably scarce. I have a boat load of all three but none in the 70s. Good Luck!

It is possible and I have a suggestion. Ask everyone you know if they have relatives or freinds in other countries. Ask school kids if there are any people from other countries in their school that they know. Then start asking them if people over there could find some for you. Sounds silly maybe but some time ago I did some work with an Engineering company that had people from many other countries. When I mentioned I collected coins, many of them produced coins from their countries for me and free. A few of them went back to their countries to live and we keep in touch and they too send me coins from there. Funny thing is I forgot to tell them I don't collect foreign coins but as long as they were free, why not. Nothing to loose by asking.

I've tried something similar for football cards and I gave up (yeah, call me a quitter) but I did have it expanded to one each of every subset...and let me tell you in 1993 there were a lot of football cards and subsets. I don't know how you define a commemorative, but in 1970 there was a FAO issue to a number of British islands (the banana coins) that I do believe went into circulation but will be harder to find and much more expensive than say one of everything from Mexico that year. Good luck and happy hunting. You've got me thinking about the same kind of thing but my birth year is going to harder to find (it is a bit earlier) Quote: Funny thing is I forgot to tell them I don't collect foreign coins but as long as they were free, why not. And justcarl, if you ever want to just get rid of those foreign coins taking up valuable space, I can send you my address. I LOVE circulation darkside. LOL
