ok so I wanted a nice even restored look to some nickels..

i added drops of nic-a-date into a saucer filled with water, probably 2-4 oz until the date started to appeared. but now they appear dark .. almost black.. any way if any, they can not be so dark?

Don't let the vinegar dry out though - I forgot about a dateless buffalo I had soaking. Came back and the top was covered in dried, green bubbles. Adding more vinegar took care of it, but I sure had a weird looking Indian for a while.

You formed verdigris, specifically, copper acetate. Added more vinegar dissolved it and you lost a layer of copper in the process.
