GoldRush58: Like your idea. Where are you picking up silver proofs at 4x face?

I buy merc and Barber coins from dealer junk boxes and ebay. Occasionally, you can find a better date coin in these boxes, it just takes a little time searching. Also, I've always wondered why people make rolls of silver proof coins. Wouldn't scratches or rub marks show up very easily on the frosty surfaces from the coins clanking around? Wouldn't it be better to house them in individual holders? Just wondering.

RPT and TenSense

When I go into coin shops or coin shows. I try to check out everything the have sitting on shelves and desks.
Lately I have been seeing Proof sets that have been cracked, broken, scratched or just partial sets. Ones that look like no one would want to buy. At the last coin show I bought three sets of proof silver quarters that way, then went back and bought the partial sets that had the silver half and dime. I have done this same thing at two different coins stores.

Last year I did that with a 1999 set of silver proofs .. I paid $50, but that is when a 1999 proof set was selling in the $300.00 range.

For a while I was doing this with silver commemorative dollars, I have bought around 20 different dollars below what Morgans were selling for from the junk silver box.

I guess I am saying keep a eye out .. I think there are a lot of silver proof sets that are priced below their silver value .. in greysheet .. and when set looks less then pristine .. than you can pick them up even cheaper.

rkp - I can understand .. the concern.

I guess just easier to put them in coin tubes. When you break a lot of proof sets, it is easy to end up with a lot of proof coins that you don't have albums for.

Yes you have to treat the roll in a manner where the coins will not rub together.

I have some proof rolls for many years .. one roll of 1961 proof nickels I know I have had over 25 years.
I think it is the same as Unc rolls .. have to take good care of them.

One thing I like .. is they look cool. My favorite is a uncirculated roll/tube of 1958 quarters. They are all Gem beautiful. People that get to see them are are amazed how good a 52 year old roll of quarters looks.
