I have been buying small amounts of silver every week for a few months. Sometimes Silver dollars ... sometimes half dollars.
Even a half pound round. The last couple weeks I am being drawn to
Proof silver quarters and commemorative silver dollars.

Some of these coins I have been getting at or under the price of coins in the junk silver boxes.

For example: I have been buying 2004 and 2005 silver proof sets,
from $22.00 to $27.00 a set. They have $1.85 in proof silver coins.
Depending on the day (the current silver price) I would pay 13 or 14 times face out of the junk silver boxes, or $24.05 to $25.90. And you still get a proof Sacagawea, two Jefferson nickels and a Lincoln Cent. When I bought my proof Westward journey nickels for my Dansco, I paid over $5.00 each.

I think finding any silver proof sets (1999 and up) for under $25.00
is some of the best buys you can get right now. And there are a lot of them out there.

I am thinking or buying up enough of these silver proof sets so I could put together some rolls of proof silver State Quarters, of course the silver dimes and halves too.

Think about it .. what is cooler a roll of circulated silver coins out of the junk silver box... or a roll of silver proof coins.

Is anyone else doing anything like this?

funny. I want to start something like this. I kinda started with the help of my dad. he has some old kennedys, peace, and morgans. ironically the stuff he gave me went into my dansco 7070. with the upcoming long beach show, I am bound to hopefully score some silver.

I had been buying junk silver coins for awhile but just cashed in them all for a 100 ounce bar. Ever since I saw one my Uncle had I was so impressed that I finally got one. It is breathtaking to hold. I still kept most of my morgans, I have a few peace left and I have all my 1 ounce silver too.

mmerc20,

Did it cost more for the 100 oz. bar than regular 100 oz. junk silver? It must of be heavy to hold in hand.

Ingersoll-Rand made the 999 Silver 100 oz bars that fit very well, even in a round floor safe.

There is a dealer just North of Paramus NJ; nice old guy, I've written about him before. He has either a 71 lbT or 91 lbT bar (yup, that's pound as in Troy pound) that he uses for a door stop. It's huge! I tried to turn it and could barely move it because it was so cumbersome and odd shaped. He bought it from an old photographer that had all of his unused movie film reprocessed. I saw the assay marks. I think I'll pursue the smaller 8 pounder too.

Oh, and old unused movie film. Hey, I wonder if you could do the same thing to used movie film. Just digitize the movie and reprocess the tinted silver. I know, wishful thinking.

Great idea for a thread...

I've been buying Morgans, dimes, quarters, Eagles and I just picked up a couple of Britannias from a CCF member. I think I'm going to start looking for 1 oz bullion coins from a number of different countries. I think it would make an interesting collection.

I started to that at some point last year ... trying to get different bullion coins, from different countries. I still hope to get some more if I can find them at a good price. So many options ...

I have been buying quarters, halves and dimes. Mostly low grade Barbers, SLQs and very low grade seated liberties.

Is no one else getting any modern silver proof coins, at below what junk silver is selling at?

I picked up 4 more partial silver proof sets last weekend. been getting them at around 4X face.
