I have had a few weird looks but I usually get what I'm after.
I don't know if it makes a difference but I get my coins from one bank and when I'm finished with them I drop them off at another. Maybe I'm being silly but I just think there is less chance of getting the same rolls back again.

That settles it, I'm going to ask for boxes when I go to the bank! I didn't have the nerve before, but knowing that others are doing it without problems makes me feel more comfortable trying it.

Yup, they don't have a problem with you buying boxes...although I go to RBC where I have an account. They sometimes ask why and smile when I tell them my daughter and I collect old coins.
Funny yesterday though, I took my new box home anxious to spend an hour and sort through a few rolls only to find thye gave me a new box from the mint! lol 50 rolls of unopened 2010. Wish there was a nice variety from this year...

A whole box of new pennies... bummer!
I may have to pull the "my daughter and I collect coins" card too, although she's only 2 :D

Haha, my daughter is only three...but she sure knows how to open rolls of coins! as long as it keeps her from my credit card...

I went in to my CIBC branch last night and asked for a box of pennies - they couldn't get it for me right away but they arranged to have one set aside for me to pick up tomorrow! Looks like I'll be doing some serious roll searching this weekend, I'll post any interesting finds.

A bank teller told me once that they ship out their excess coins every Thursday. So when I go roll hunting I stop in on Wednesday, I figure that way your getting coins that all the business in the area have taken in over the past week.

Is there any point keeping a box of new 2009 pennies or should I just take it back to the bank? Or keep a roll for myself and take the rest back?

Try your local bank. If they do not have enough in stock they can oder extra and you will have them in a few day. all of the big 5 banks in Canada will do this

I wish I could get lucky enough to pull a few rolls of 2009 or older I always get boxes of circulated cents which is what I want of course but it would be nice to get the occasional mint roll. I deal with a credit union and they treat me good when it comes to getting boxes. I've found CIBC to be very good about handing out boxes and RBC is pretty lenient too if they have them in my experience though TD is a little anal retentive about giving anything to anyone who doesn't have an account with them. I always go to the business desk rather than a teller, I find tellers feel like its their own money sometimes lol
