once a week I go to a bank here in Halifax and ask for a box of nickels....they are always happy to see me as they don't have to send them back....
so far no 64 extra water lines,
one bug tail
no 65 small beads
but a heck of a lot of nickel nickels

Is there a standard number of coins or rolls in a box?
Until I started reading this forum I too did not know that you could get boxes of coins from a Canadian bank.
I usually buy a few rolls and I get the same response from the tellers that a few others have experienced.

there are 50 rolls in each box, 2500 cents ($25 face in a box) & 2000 nickels ($100 face in a box)

Thanks for all of these posts. I didn't know about box buys. Now that I do I'll be visiting my banks on Wednesday's box hunting.

Went to the bank and ordered my first two boxes of coins. Had to order them as they said they did not have that much in stock. Only had to wait a few days to get them and the teller said I could bring them back and she would order me a couple more if I wanted.
This has been an exciting venture. I got home and started my search, looking for the elusive Canadian 2006 P penny that so many have said they have gotten in change. Well I have looked through my first box and no 2006 P but what I did find was a roll of dimes in a penny sleeve. Not a great monetary gain but still interesting. What was even more interesting was that I found a few American pennies in my first roll. So decided to see how many I would find in these boxes. Well as I said I have looked through the first box and I found 130 American pennies and only 10 duplicates. I decided that this would make a good start to an American penny collection. I'm not one who wants the finest grade for a collection, just the hunt and the treasures that I find are all that I need to get me excited. Anyway my first experience with boxes of coins has been a positive one and once I get through the second box I wil be back to the bank for another couple of boxes.

This has been a great read and very informative. I have bought rolls in the past from banks, but didn't even know that you could buy boxes. I've always collected "different" coins just for fun but have recently been a little more serious about my collecting. I'm heading to the bank shortly. Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences.

I finally got a box of pennies and a box of nickles after three visits to my branch. I am so excitied to get at them. I'm sure I'm sounding like a kid in a candy store right now and the excitement will wear out after my first box or two. I've created myself a spreadsheet to keep track of what I find. I'll be sure to post any hidden treasures, or just taking $125 back to the bank Treasures or not, I'm sure I'll fill alot of holes in my collection seeing I'm just starting.

I go to 3 different banks almost everyday, the Scotia, TD, and Royal, for boxes of coins or just bundles. It has gotten to the point when they see us coming, they just get the coinage ready. How cool is that!

I love it when I go in and ask. Can I have 3 boxes of pennies and a box of nickles and I am only 12 and they all know my name. =) They sometimes tell me they don't have them so I just opened a debit card so I can order.

Recently got 2 boxes of cents from my bank. One box held 50 rolls of 2010 cents. The other had a 1988 mint roll and 20 2010 mint rolls. The other 29 rolls I searched and found a 2008 cent on a dime planchet!!. Excellent

All you have to do, is get the phone number from CIBC for coin orders, and they will be happy to help you out. That's what I do, and CIBC isn't even my bank.

I was told by my RBC branch (the lady calls me to pick up old coins, so shes very nice and helpful) that they are no longer able to place orders for pennies. So she gives me whatever customers bring in.

Yes, no longer able to order penny boxes, but I've been in a number of banks this past week and many of them had boxes piled up near the business teller. Looks like a lot are coming in. Over the next week all the banks are going to stop giving them out to customers so it's your last chance for big batches of pennies right now.
to Kingsnipes - it's best if after you've searched through the rolls from one bank that you bring them back to a different location so they don't get mad at you... :)
I've also noticed a lot of new 2011 nickels going into circulation. A couple RBC locations and a Sobeys store all had fresh Mint rolls.
