I bought this coin based on a medium quality picture and I could make out the double punched 9 type 2 but when I received it today and took a better picture, I notice doubling on the 8, 5 and possibly on the top-right of the 1. Do all 1859 DP9 type 2s have doubling on the 185 as well or is this unique? If so, what would you call this one?

Yes, there is doubling eleswhere with them. You have a DP#2 and a good, crisp strike, regardless the actual grade. The 1 looks like post-mint damage, but the 5 & 8 are near normal for them. If you have the new 2011 (65th edition) Charlton's, look at pages 278 (DP#2) throughp 284 .. all r?p'd 9's of some ilk.

Thanks! I do have the latest Charlton and looked at those pages but they do not mention if it is common for the other numbers to be doubled in a double punch variety. Thanks for letting me know that it is common. The coin is VF-20 and is definatly a keeper for me.

The new Charlton lists the major identification marker. Others may be present but are not listed. An exhaustive list of all markers for each of the coins illustrated would have been a huge task. What is presented is what you need for a positive identification.

Laconic, in a recent purchase, I picked up 4 1859 cents and three of them had some sort of doubling. A real nice acquisition I would say. Congrats.
