Actually The Royal Mint and branches of The Royal Mint also did 20th Century re strikes: The Royal Mint, London: 1936: 150,125 1937: 3,719,415 1938: 5,086,085 1940: 3,766,391 1941: 2,002,000 1949: 500,000 1954: 2,560,000 1955: 800,000 1957: 272,429 1958: 340,171 1959: 202 1960: 213,180 1961: 749,072 Total 20,159,070 The Royal Mint, Bombay: 1941: 16,344,523 The Mint, Birmingham: (Commercial Mint under contract) 1949: 575,000 1953: 180,000 1954: 2,434,000 1955: 399,500 Total 3,488,500 Total from British Royal Mint and Branch Mints: 39,992,093 Maria Theresa Taler re strikes. Other Mints are alleged to have been involved in 20th Century restrikes are: Antwerp Florence Leningrad Marseilles Brussels Reference: The 1780 Restrike Talers of Maria Theresa, by M.R. Broome, The Doris Stockwell Memorial Papers, No.1 reprinted from the Numismatic Chronicle, 7th Series, Vol. X11, 1972. How do you tell the difference? Basically, I wouldn't bother trying. If it is in mint condition and looks freshly minted (as mine does) I'll betcha that it's a re strike! I have an excellent reference which tells all of the minor differences, and I have not bothered to find out. It would be an exercise in futility
