A couple years ago I remember seeing on an ebay auction for those "uncleaned ancient Roman coins" that you can bake honey on to them when they are cleaned to make them have that nice glaze or look real professional. Has anyone here heard of doing that? I can't really find anything on google and I once tried it on my own in an oven but the honey didn't do anything...

Now, NOS, I'm sure it did something...didn't it make a big mess?

Seriously, I have never heard of doing that. I am a believer in the olive oil cleaning method because it doesn't harm the coins. Of course this method takes forever....

Well I'm trying to remember what it did and I think it got too hot and burned or didn't do anything. Using olive oil works okay but I've had the same group of coins in olive oil non-stop for over 2 years and the dirt is looser on some of them but others it seems to have done nothing...

I have the same problem. Mine have been soaking for almost a year. I have heard that if you heat the oil, it speeds up the process. I haven't had time to try it, so if you do, let me know what happens.

Well I got one out yesterday and the dirt was soft but I still needed some sort of pick and I used an old pen and toothpicks but I'm worried of them putting in scratches or messing up the appearance with streaks.

I think you'll be okay with wooden toothpicks and a soft toothbrush. Every now and then I take mine out and go over them with a soft toothbrush and then I put them back in to soak. I haven't started using a toothpick yet. I'm hoping to get most of the crud off before I have to use that.

I may take them all out and brush them as you regularly do. You'd think after more than 2 years it would just come off. Anyways I'm gonna do a very thorough search on google and yahoo on using honey and I'll of course let you know if I find anything.

Well they've just been in a corner of the laundry room all this time. Basically I just set the jar down and forgot about them. I haven't even bought any of those uncleaned ancient Roman coins since then as it is too frustrating cleaning them because they can be easily damaged.
