Hey there!
I would suggest "Paper Money of the United States. A Complete Illustrated Guide with Valuations" by Arthur L. Friedberg and Ira S. Friedberg
http://www.amazon.com/United-States...ds=friedberg
It's a great general reference but the pricing is the high end of retail.
Or if you're into nationals http://www.nbncensus.com/ is a great place to start. It's and online census of national notes including auction references of rare notes. It does cost about $100 a year to subscribe to but you can right that cost off as a charitable contribution to a non-profit company. It's run by Andrew Shiva who is both very well versed in and passionate about nationals.
Also, if you don't know about Heritage auctions I'd check out HA.com and poke around on there. It's a great reference.
Depending on where you are in the country you are there are 2 large paper shows held in Chicago. One in January called CPMX and one in Oct called the PCDA show. As well as a show held in June in Memphis. These are the three largest currency shows in the country and are a GREAT learning experience. I was just at the Memphis show in June and they had 12 different one hour education sessions on everything from $1 legal tender notes to Nationals. I sat in on 11 of them and I feel like I learned a lot.
I really hope this helped. This is all I can think of for now but I'll keep on thinking for ya.
Happy Collecting!
