Travancore was a semi-independent state in the South of India. The device on the reverse features a conch, which was a central religious symbol for the region. The state issued coins intermittanly until independence (1949).
The monogram "RV" means Rama Varma, the King of Travancore at that period.Below the date it is written in Malayalam the mother tongue of Keralites "Panam Onnu".The conch was the dynastic crest of the Travancore rulers.
