Hi Folks. Found this site and my way back in after a very long time since I lost track of it. Its still fun to check through my change and learn a little about what to look for and at. In other words, I'm bit by the bug a bit again lately and hence thats how I found you all again :D

I came across a 1975 penny and have been wondering why and what makes this penny look so different. I've found mentions and the odd photo of something referred to as "mortar set" but can't find much info about what that is.

I scanned the coin and will try to upload the photo, but its difficult to describe the colour/s and the scan don't quite show it.

Most obvious is that the face side the metal is an obvious yellower?-silvery-ish? tone than most pennies, with bits of bright copper showing close to edges, then of course under and around words and in cracks & edges of raised parts, is very dark brownish ... making for quite a attractive details looking coin face. The dark highlights make for a neat looking detailed portrait :)

I've never seen this colour on a penny before.

The back (date side) by the way, is typical penny looking. Its the face part thats a different variation.

Any ideas? Thanks ;)

............ oops, sorry, can't see a way to upload the scanned image from my computer. Will try post it somewhere then link to it ;)

It's hard to tell with a small picture, but it likely came into contact with some chemical. Pennies soaked in vinegar often take on a similar colour, but if your coin has it only on the obverse then perhaps it sat in the street soaking in motor oil or something.

Thanks for your response Splatto ;)

Judging by the fact that the edging around the Queen's image and seeing tiny bits and remnants of bright copper, I'm assuming the whole coin had copper plating on it and it has been almost completely worn off somehow. It sure stands out from my other pennies. A pretty penny ...

Here is the reverse of that 1975 cent. Pretty normal looking.

I don't know how to make the pictures bigger for showing in here. I don't see options in that photobucket site to enlarge images :(
