Here is another St. Gaudens for you to check-out. This is a raw 1908. Any and All input will be appreciated. I'll admit the light was WAY TOO BRIGHT when I took the picture, LOL...

Thanks
Ben

Ben, I'll defer to Ageka for a skilled analysis, but it appears at first blush to be a higher circulated grade St. Gaudens although, as you mentioned, it's bright which is covering the obverse high points, especially Liberty's left knee. If it is circulated, it wasn't circulated much and it may be uncirculated. It almost appears less circulated than Pattiewhack's 1924 Double Eagle, but I need a practiced eye to confirm or deny this.

I wouldn't mind at all seeing more St. Gaudens in this Coin Grading Practice forum. A new field for me.

I tried every photofilter I have but I cannot see the nose
The nose and the left knee will be the first to show slide
Nor can I get around the glare
The eagle side looks uncirculated
Leading edge of the feathers looks ok

This could be a sandblasted art deco jewelry piece
This being said it may be an MS64
And yes to me it looks better then Pattiewhacks 1924
You picked that up right away Fred

Here is a picture I took using a different lighting source. Table lamp with 60watt bulb this time vs. a 160 flood lamp setup.

Take Care
Ben

I also noticed it is the "no motto" variety. Coincidentally, I also noticed a display ad at the bottom of the ebay Discussions forum which highlighted the 1908 "no motto" Double Eagle, so I clicked through to the address for Goldline
http://www.goldline.com/d/index.php...e+eagle+coin . I'm not in the investment market at this time, but I did find this topic and the display ad interestingly coincidental. I don't know how long a display ad remains nor if they are constantly being rotated in or not, so it may not appear for others.

I still frequent several investor forums
Sombody got badly dissilusioned by MS64 DE
Since he knew nothing about them I suppose they were the most common years
Between ask and bid spread and high costs he got his money back instead of making 50% which is what the price of gold did the last year

I think as an investment one has to know very well what one is doing and maybe simple bullion coins may be better
Rest in Peace

I had a couple gold coins (1850s $1) for quite a few years until I sold them three years ago. The price of gold had stagnated for ten years as did the value of the coins, so I decided they weren't going anywhere.

Somebody shoot me. Expecially if I decide to get back into gold.

If you decide to get back into gold you might consider deciding the next 6 weeks

I think not. I just can't read the gold market - too much risk. Besides, I'll be getting back to work during that period.

But why six weeks? What's gonna happen then?

My friend Seven of Eleven and I have developed a timing of gold system we stopped posting on the investment forums because too many people claiming possession of privat jets and retirements at age 25 were getting us very discomfortable on our meager budgets
So we stopped giving this selfproclaimed gang of rich people free advice
Our timing forecasts a probable cycle low about 6 weeks from now

Since most Elliot Wavers are expecting the start of wave 3 of III
this means gold is going to keep going up and up with big swings after mid septembre
So 1000 $ by january is realistic
