I recently purchased this coin as part of a large group and was able to look it up in my Red Book of Modern World Coins 1850-1964. It is a Y326, 327, 328 or 329 and it would have the same KM number. I just have no idea if it's a 1 or 2 Chio or a 1/2 or 1 Yuan and I don't know what years. According to the book, it was produced between 1914 and 1921. I would also like some help with the grade.

The first photo came out a bit dark but that was due to poor camera angle. The front looks very much like the back except for the dark lines which are some sort of smudge that looks like it could be removed.

It's a 1914, 1 yuan. I would look up the KM for you, but I don't have the book handy :/

For the smudge, try acetone. A few of my Chinese silvers from that era with the same problem at the marks slightly removed in a quick acetone dip.

Details are a bit flat... which gives me an impression that it might be fake. However, I'd say AU/AU+ judging based on the top character and the smaller details (collar, epaulets, cheek) on the obverse

Hard to imagine that anyone would both faking a $15-$40 coin but I guess it's possible. AU seems about right looking at it in hand. The obverse looks like a very light strike however the reverse is strong and very nice.

Nothing wrong with the Chinese, just the rampant counterfeiting. It just happens that the majority lately has been comming from there and my area of interest has been highly plagued.

in terms of why counterfeit, I just looked it up in Krause. it could be 329, 329.1, 329.2, 329.3 or 329.4. And according to those values if they were aiming at XF to UNC they were aiming a lot high than $40.
