I've been given 1.5kilos of 1c and 2c coins - so I'm using these to play with grading and working out which is the best quality of each year. (I've downloaded a quick guide from http://www.aussie-coins.com/Grading%20Eigner.doc)

I would say none of these coins are better than 'good'. I'm saying 'good' given all the main details are visible. Many have small solid dark brown deposits (what would that be?) I attempted to gently scratch some off with a fingernail, but it doesn't budge. Some of the coins have a green deposit, some of this seems solid, on other coins it's like a dusting across a section of the coin.

Most of the coins are dull although some have a strong coppery red shine in parts of the coin. All the coins have small nicks and abrasions on them - some more and deeper than others.

So my question is, what would be your criteria to decide the best out of a bad bunch in this case?

eg if you had two '75 2c -
  • #1. is very dull with some deep nicks on the reverse with no brown or green deposits while

  • #2. is less dull with a reddish shine on the reverse and two small green deposits on the obverse.

which would you say is the better out of a bad pair?

Second question: in this lot was one Mint roll (?) 50 one cent coins wrapped in a light brown paper with the words 'Bank Commonwealth'. Should I open the roll to see what year is on the coins? Does this mean the coins in the roll are all uncirculated? There is no date on the roll.

1. I would avoid anything with green on it. Dark green is unsightly but stable, while pale dusty green is likely to be "contagious" bronze disease and can jump from coin to coin.

2. Unless the roll says "Royal Australian Mint", you can't guarantee the contents are all going to be uncirculated, because everyone except the Mint rolled whatever coins they happened to have lying around. Yours is a Commonwealth Bank wrapped roll, dating from the time before those little plastic bags were introduced by banks for bulk coin handling.

if the coins on the ends of the roll look strongly uncirculated then theres a good chance it would be Unc. I wouldnt open it to check. Better to leave it as is. Especially if the end coins have a natural, very shiny appearance.
I have come across security rolls where the roll paper looks crisp and both ends are very shiny. If its possible to get a batch of rolls with the same date then its a strong indicator that they security rolls are all UNC. The chances of having a circ coin mixed in with the rolls would be very very low imho. You could always have the ends of the roll looked at by a coin dealer.

I think the first thing to do would be to, as Sap says, remove anything that has turned green. This is a copper cancer called Verdigris and will spread to other coins. I always suggest they move to a "quarantine" bag or area until you can go through them and decide if they need to be saved or tossed.

Coppery red or shine is lustre and is appealing.

Have you sorted them into dates? Check the 2c 1967's and 1968's for varieties without the designers initials SD.

Hey Sap, Ozzie and Purple, thanks for the comments,

I had a friend (who knows more than I) look at the mint role. His remarks agreed with Sap's - but he's going to check something else all the same. I suspect you're right 'on the money' Sap. Thanks for your time.

I will do the quarantine idea K - thanks for that. Makes sense. It also helps in narrowing the year choice down to just the one. Thanks also for the comment re: '67 and '68 sans-SD. I'll go through them tonight.

I really like that lovely deep red shine that some of them have.
