today my boyfriend and I were looking for coins in a giant heap of change. I came across a 2001 new york State Quarter coin, one side is gold I think, and the other side is regular color. is this worth something or an error?

First, welcome if this is your first post and congrats.

You need to post a picture or a link to see the picture.

I wouldn't speculate on what you found. It could be an any thing from an error to a counterfeit. Please post a picture.

Welcome to the community! Pictures help but one thought is that it could also be toning like a roll end coin. Often we find nickels with a champagne color.

Possibly one of HSN's "collectible" gold plated quarters with one side of plating worn off.

Very doubtful that this is some kind of "Mint error".
I think the others have it right.......either it was "plated" on one end by someone or some-HSN-like company, or it was just "toning" by being on the end of a roll of coins for some time.
Either way......likely it's only worth facevalue of .25 CENTS ! .....

Not likely to have been plated on just one side or to have been plated and had it wear off one side. Most likely is just an odd case of toning. Less likely but possible is a missing clad layer. Getting an accurate weight is the most important first step. In grams to at least one decimal place preferably two places. Pictures don't really mean that much in a case like this. All they can tell you is that is isn't the normal color and we already know that. They can't really tell you why it is the wrong color.
