As some of you may recall, I've been going through my friends giant hoard of "pocket change" he collected over many years. He originally told me started the hoard about 20 years ago. It's been about a year since I started the project and know I now the stash is much older. A couple of days ago I returned what was worth him keeping (copper, wheats and BU's) and money from the junk coins I turned in. He took me to the last giant bottle of cents and a smaller bottle of nickels. The cent bottle was far to heavy to move, so we poured out about 40 lbs and I took that and the nickels with me. I started on the cents last night and discovered they are about 99% copper. Mostly 60's and 70's with a lot of BU coins. Based on the BU coins, I estimate he started hoarding about 1975-1977. I estimate his hoard is actually closer to 35 years old! I'm finding lots of 1971 and 1972 BU cents! This means I have a pretty good shot at finding a nice DDO! What's really cool is I don't have all the BU 70's rolls I need, so it's looking like I'm going to fill that void in my BU roll set. I'm also finding some BU 80-89 coins in this batch....not very many, but the coins I'm finding are really nice BU's. Pulled about 15 1986-D's out already....those are some of the most valuable rolls in the Memorial zinc cent series. It's funny, I've searched about 500-600 coins already and my cull box only has about 20 coins in it. It's AMAZING! LOL Everything else has been copper or BU's.

Wow seems like a VERY nice find of LMCs! I'd be interested to see what varieties you find in those BU coppers!

I'm not much of a variety hunter, it slows me down too much. I only look for the major stuff. I now have almost a full 5 gal pail of tightly packed copper. I bet some of you hardcore variety hunters would have fun with my copper pile.

So far nothing exciting Scooby. Just some 70's and early 80's BU's. It's helping my BU roll set though. I'm really getting a HUGE surplus of BU coins. I'm going to have to unload them soon. I can't decide if I should make more rolls or just sell bags of BU coins. Perhaps I'll just stash them away because the valuations are absurd. I'm going to call the CDN folks soon and tell them they MUST adjust their Lincoln BU roll prices. There's no way in H-E-DOUBLE TOOTHPICK I'm going to sell a copper BU roll for $1.10 when the melt value is $1.08.

Awesome! I'm sure you're having a blast going thru it all and seeing all of those shiny BU cents from 30 years ago or more.

Hope you come up with many great coins. The only thing I'd worry about is the usual problems with going through someone else's coins. Not only a friend but relatives as well. You go through them all and end up telling them a few nice ones but nothing really great. So now they wonder if you pocketed all the expensive ones? How much did you keep that you didn't tell them about? What percente did you pocket? Are you going to give them some added money for the above face ones you found? No this doesn't happen all the time but I've known quite a few where such situations created some really, really hard feelings. With your situation I hope all goes well.

Carl - It's no problem with my friend, he's a muli-millonaire. He doesn't really care and his wife is happy to get rid of all these jugs of change. They trust me 100%. In fact, I've only found one fairly valuable coin, a 1999 WAM in MS-63. I gave it to him, explained the value and he handed it right back to me. LOL He told me to keep whatever coins I wanted, cash in the rest and give him back what might be worth keeping over the long-term so he can give them to his grandkids. Everything is really cool with him because he already has plenty of money.

I haven't had any issues with my friends either. They understand that every pile of change they bring me will probably not have anything good. If everything was easy to find, they wouldn't be valuable or collectable. The fact that I have pointed out the '88 RDV-006, and a wide rim Susan B. has established my honesty with them. I make sure I tell all of my friends that one of our friends has something good. I even point out minor DDR columns, clashes, chips or cracks so that they at least know that if I find anything, I will tell them. I don't want them to lose interest in bringing their coins to me.

That's all really great. But of course if someone has sufficient money and they know you well and trust you, that is fantastic. Like I said I've already run into people that such situations run into some problems. Even with a person I know that used to hand me piles of change to go through. Suddenly he no longer does that. I asked him why one day and he said I'm probably finding very expensive coins and not telling him. NUTS but it does happen. A lady I have known for probably 40 years told me she has a pile of coins left to her from her Dad. She will not allow anyone to see them since they may walk off with them. There are lots of people like this so it's nice to know you don't have to worry about those. Good luck with those coins. Watch for that 55 Double Die.
