The Krause catalog shows 2 different
images for these coins. The only difference
being the Obv.Leg.If the legend is in French,
there is a Note:German occupation WII and
if the legend is in Dutch,no such Note.
I'm confused.
Were both(the French & Dutch)legends minted
in Belgium?

Thanks,
Ok,so why the Krause German Occupation WWII
for one and not the other and why the two
different legends(some French,some Dutch)
the mintage appears to be 50/50?

The reason for the two languages, is that Belgium is an officially bilingual country. The Flanders region is mainly Dutch-speaking, Walloons speak French.

If I remember my history correctly, prior to 1830 most of the northern part of the country was part of the Netherlands so the people spoke Dutch (Flemish). After 1830 independence was gained and a monarchy was formed. In the Southern part of the country closer to France the Walloons spoke French. The language difference did not chance.

Also my Krause (the 25th edition) has the composition (Zinc) followed by the occupation note, and then breaks them up by language. In this case, I think you can safely infer that the occupation note applies to both languages, as does the composition.

Thanks for the replies.
I had been surfing for about
an hour, and though I was unable
to find anything that specificly
said so,I was beginning to think
that this two languages for the same coin
was done in an attempt to placate
the peoples of both of the two major languages.
From what I WAS able to find, cultural differences
have, apparently, been a problem for/in Belgium for a VERY long time
and still continue today.
