Was the pearl in the early Israel coins a mint mark? I don't see a reference to that but if someone knows why the pearl and why not the pearl I would be interested.

thanks

It isn't a mint mark, but a variety. It consists of a small dot (pearl) under the bar at the bottom of the reverse on certain denominations. (At least that's the best I can recall off the top of my head).

sorry, I should have been more clear. I know what the pearl is and where to find it. My question is WHY is it there. there must be some reason or maybe not.

And then if this is considered a variety, why no separate number for it in Krause?

Sorry that I didn't grasp your question. Since it is not a mintmark, nor a flaw in a particular die, we know that someone intended it to be there. But at this point I think the reason is lost. Maybe someone with a deeper knowledge of the subject will chime in. My knowledge is not at all deep.
