This was the first time sending a coin to ICG and they sent a conformation email after they graded it. Under grade it says "88"
I am new to collecting but I thought coins are graded up to 70, what does an 88 mean?
Thanks for any input on this topic.

Most likely 88 is referring to a designation, such as cleaned or altered. It could also be a mistake on ICG's part, photos should solve the problem. Quote:
Quote from another thread:
Didnt know what that meant at first but called and found out the news that they are calling it "questionable authenticity" as well. Then the 88 has something to do with the questionable authenticity.

Yea, called them yesterday and a 88 means questiionable authenticity... Any clue now on what to do next with it? Probably going to sell it for the gold.

Update on the 88. As you well know my coin was graded as questionable authenticity but just as soon as I got it back and talked to ICG, they want me to send it back for another look? Hopefully a second run-through will get it over the hump, but who knows.

don't really understand why they would not think it was authentic then want to see it again to make sure it wasn't authentic. Quote: Any clue now on what to do next with it?
Probably going to sell it for the gold if its not authentic it may not be real gold either. You would need to do a gravity test or some other form of test to be sure the gold contect is what it should be

Matt, What did you do with the coin? Did you send it back and what was the result? I just received two 88's from them. One half eagle and one quarter eagle. Both weight and measure correctly. Haven't called them to inquire yet.

I have dealt with ICG a bit, as I live in the Tampa Area and they are always at the local shows. I have also spoken to Randy Campbell, their senior grader a few times. They will always take a second look if requested. Also if you send coins you can request them to give explanations on their detail grade of a specific coin in question.

I think we still have it. It was my dads purchase and I think he has it in his pile of counterfit coins. 88 is questionable authenticity, but that doesn't mean its not real, so he is holding on to it for the time being. Thats weird about the 1/4 and 1/2 eagle, they should know those pretty well Ours was a coin from Thailand so I could kinda understand why they didnt want to put a grade on it. Let me know how it goes when you talk to them
