OK , here is another question. I have heard that GSA CC Dollars in the original holder are worth more than there ungraded counterparts.
I had my local dealer tell me 20.00 more.
Have any of you good folks ever heard of this ?
As always thanks in advance for any input !

GSA dollars in the original GSA holders carry a premium over both raw and TPG graded coins. Using Coin World Values online as a guide (not saying their prices are correct, but merely that they bear out the differences) we find the following listings 1878CC MS60 $225, 1878CC GSA $350 1879CC MS60 $4000 1879CC GSA $6000 1881O MS60 $50 1881O GSA $200 This list goes on and on but you get the point. There is a substantial price difference between GSA/non GSA coins. If you look in the archives for this forum there have been several threads on GSA dollars that you will find very interesting reading.

Thanks jfransch your info was informative.
I was hoping more of the forum members would chime in with their real life experiences with the GSA CC dollars vs non GSA dollars and their buying and selling prices.

I have a couple GSA CC coins to send to PCGS. The GSA holders are trashed but coins are fine. Last time I looked before making that decision the CC's in a PCGS holder were bringing same kind of money. The dates I checked for were 1880/79CC and 1885CC. The prices on the common date CC's has softened up a bit. nlp

You can also have the best of both worlds and get NGC graded GSAs, they wrap a certification band around the GSA slab so no need for a crack out.

The original GSA slabs with NGC "wrap around grades" are really nice and still command the full premium for a GSA coin. The coins broken out and slabbed TPG do not, even if they carry the designation "GSA".

Quote: I had my local dealer tell me 20.00 more As long as his base price is reasonable, I'd buy every GSA CC he had for a $20 premium. These are getting scarcer every day due to being cracked for a "real" grade by those who don't care about the provenance. There will come a day when they carry a huge premium.

SuperDave, it would seem that folks would send them to NGC to have them graded while still in the GSA holder. Then they would hve the best of both worlds !

Quote: it would seem that folks would send them to NGC to have them graded while still in the GSA holder. some do but there are still plenty that do not. Some people that bought these when they went on sale didn't do so because of the GSA holders, they did it just to have the Morgans inside. When people that have had them since they went on sale and never made a big deal about them die and their family gets the coins they usually don't know much about them either except that they are a Morgan dollar with a CC mint mark and they crack them out just because they don't know what they are. Then you have the registry people that wants all their coins in PCGS holders, they don't care what the coin is as long as its in the PCGS holder and its the grade they wanted. All this equals to less and less GSA Dollars in their original holders which will make the ones that are in their original holders worth more as time goes by
