Sorry to be spamming you with all my questions! But, how prevalent are fakes, especially in the higher grade coins (and especially for higher grade gold and silver coins)? Coming from an ancient coins background, forgeries are a big issue, and often very hard to tell from the real thing. Is it the same with the more desirable US coins as well? Thanks again!

Are there some coins that tend to have a higher incidence of forgery? Or is it any high-value coins (I'm presuming that the fakers don't bother with low value stuff as it's probably not worth their while)?

For that matter, it seems like folks trust the NGC and PCGS for validating authenticity. But how does one know for sure that the slabs themselves aren't bogus? Surely someone who can fake a coin could fake a slab?

There are fake slabs out there, and it's the same with authenticating coins. If you look at a lot of fake and real slabs you can tell the difference. It all boils down to experience.

Quote: Are there some coins that tend to have a higher incidence of forgery? Trade dollars. You can search ebay right now and likely find a raw Trade dollar for sale from a Chinese seller that is almost certainly fake. Fake slabs? Sure, they're out there but not nearly as common as raw fakes. There's also a lot of hysteria about fakes. I'd guess well over 99% of the coins on the market are genuine but that's little consolation if you end up with a fake.

I have heard that there are now fake PCGS slabs , with fake coins in the holders. I am not sure how to tell the difference.
Has anyone else heard of this issue ?

The overall look just isn't right, with the font often being a lot bolder and off and the the edges of fake slabs are a little too obtuse, if I remember correctly.

Has anyone else heard of this issue ? The first fake PCGS slabs showed up in 1989. (The first fake ANACS slabs were Mar 2007, fake NGC's in Aug 2007.) They were domestically produced an rapidly stamped out. The first recent Chinese fake PCGS slabs appeared in Feb of 2008. Those slabs had a flaw that was easily visible in photos and had other flaws thet were easy to spot in hand. Recently they have improved their product and eliminated the easy to spot in photos flaw. I have not had a chance to see the latest ones in hand so I don't know if the other flaws have been corrected.
