I know these are to not be cleaned but I want to get this crap off the coin if it is possible.

Sorry the scans are weak but it's kinda gooey like there was masking type tape on it.

Any thought?

Thanks

Acetone should desolve any of the tape without effecting the coin...rinse with clean water and NEVER RUB it...

Alright. I always heard acetone but thought of thought as "cleaning" so it seemed to me as a double standard but I guess cleaning, like you said involves rubbing it.

Thanks

Forgive my newbie comment, but is there a thread or procedure on where to get/how to do an acetone dip? I just found a franklin that has gunk on it too and is in serious need of help, as it needs to find a home in my whitman!

If what is on the coin is organic, acetone will take it off, however be forewarned that the coin may be a different color/tone under the slime than it is everywhere else. Depends how long the slime has been there.

Shoot, good point jfransch.

Americanmafia, I'm not sure because I've never used it. Maybe run a quick search and you should definitely get what you need.

With that much reside you may have to let it soak a little longer and it will take multiple treatments. I would also agitate the coin in the acetone. The movement of the acetone back and forth over the gunk will help to dissolve it and carry it away from the coin. Once it is all gone do a final rinse with fresh acetone by pouring over the coin to rinse of and carry away any last traces. (a dip in a bowl will just redeposit gunk back on the coin when it is pulled out and it dries.

Be sure to rinse using distilled water for minimal water spotting.

As well, sudsy Ammonia can be used on silver coinage. Acetone and Ammonia. As for the process, the acetone needs to be in a glass container. (it will eat plastic and the likes) and the ammonia can be in whatever. Do not swish the coin in the fluids, just let it sit there for a period of time then rinse with RO (reverse osmosis) water. (can be bought at the grocery store... if not, use distilled water) Let air dry! In NO WAY should you pat them dry with a towel or anything at all.

Both of these chemicals are safe to use of silver coinage.
