He wants silver value ($120) but I made it clear I could not pay that much since it's purity is a factor.

If you were to buy it you would want to make a profit on it. The dealer yo sold it to would want to make a profit on it. The dealer would probably have to pay an assaying fee on it, and the smelter is also going to want to make a profit on it. So you have the $120 less maybe a $35 assaying fee, plus the fact that the dealer is going to heavily discount it because it isn't marked and he can't tell the fineness, and you would have to discount it as well for the same reason my guess is that it might be worth $40 to $50.

Send that heap to Cash4Gold and see what they make of it! It's free to check, they will send it back if you don't make a deal.

Please don't send anything to Cash4Gold.

I don't see any reason to buy this even if you were 100% sure it was silver unless it was way less than spot. You won't be able to resell to anyone other than a refinery. Assuming you can find one that will deal with that small of an amout & not charge assay fees you will end up with 90% of spot at best.

Well......... now that I have read through everything, I just have to speak my mind.

I would lay odds that the silver item mentioned was an old hand poured thing that someone did and they used a bunch of old silver jewelry, utensils, etc. to do it. It could be mixed in with anything silver colored.

I hope he stayed clear of that thing.
