Hello to everyone, new to the forum. I have been collecting Canadian coins for a number of years and have quite a few doubles, triples etc. of coins, from large cents to silver dollars. What is the best avenue for me to sell some of these coins so I can a fair value for them? I'm a little leery walking into a dealer, I feel I should be able to do better than what they would probably offer.
Thanks in advance

Depends what you have. It's hard to sell common/average stuff right now through just about any venue. ebay remains one of the best "do it yourself" type of selling options, but there's the very real possibility of getting 50% of book value at the moment. If you have nicer/more sought after items, there will always be a buyer for you somewhere. All my "buy it now" auctions are collecting dust on ebay right now, and in honesty are not even generating any offers. It's a good time to buy, and a good time to hold, but IMO not an especially great time to sell.

If you do not need the money,I suggest you wait.If you want to try selling on ebay to test the market, you could list a couple of items after you look at the completed items listing similar to what you want to sell.It tells you what to expect. Unless you have valuable collection, the dealers would not pay much for commun coins.Lucky to get 40% of Trends.Maybe you could give us a general idea of what you want to part with. Good luck.

Thanks all, I will gather to see exactly what I may want to part with. Need to leave town for a few days but I will post when I get back. Perhaps someone can tell me how to go about setting up on ebay and trying a few coins on there. I have also been trying to scan and crop some pictures so I can upload but not having good luck, especially the cropping part. I have a cannon 4400f scanner. Perhaps some hints on that as well would be appreciated. Thanks

what value are the coins you are looking at selling? if they are low valued (under $10), chances are you will get no more than a couple bucks for them. ebay charges insertion fees and final value fees, so something you sell for a buck or two, you might not even see a return on. for high value coins ($100+), ebay would be risky. it would sell, but you could very well get less than half of trend for it, which could be a big loss. you might want to consider putting any of these coins in a real auction. torex is coming up in October, I'm not sure if they're still accepting coins or not, but it would probably be a better option for valuable coins, in my opinion.

I agree 100% with the auction option if there are some nice coins. Alternately, what I have been doing more than anything recently is making trades, which is handy since neither side has to take a hit on selling price.
I'm always willing to help people with image resizing and posting, if you need a hand (or if anyone does for that matter), feel free to send me a message.

If you have a coin club in your area ,I suggest going out to see if you like it. Most usually have an auction with little or no commission.

Thanks to all for your replies. Looks like I should hold them for now, as suggested. I do have quite a few coins whose retail value would be over $100. Still struggling to scan and crop proper images so I can post some. I like the idea of trading as well.

In the meantime, you could also explore the trade option mentioned above. Since trades don't reflect general market swings, you will get equivalent value for your coins. Make a list of what you are looking for and see if someone bites.
In terms of publishing the list, I am not sure what forums are open to you. This one (CCF) only allows established members to trade. There are probably Yahoo groups with tradelists. Finally, you could always start your own site on Blogger etc, and then drum up traffic where you are allowed.
Can anyone else suggest venues for trading that are open to "unproven" traders?

I tried to send 1cent an e-mail reg. his offer of help in reg. to scanning, cropping and uploading a coin image but it said that I don't have access to the e-mail system. Don't know what gives. I tried to upload an image but got message saying it was too big (160K). How do I get it down to the accepted size?
Thanks

Canada-EH: you can host the picture on a site like Photobucket dot com and then link to it with the IMG tags, or try a photo program to either reduce the image size or decrease the quality. Even something basic like MS Paint can do a re-size through the "Image" -> "Resize/Skew" options.
