I have been collecting coins for over 50 years. I have had many different types, foreign, ancient Greek and Roman but have settled into my favorite which are US commemoratives. In the late 80's I paid more for some coins than they are worth at this time. I realize that I bought them from coin shops and shows but I felt that I got a good deal. The value of all coins went south soon after and soon some people in need of cash sold their collections for silver or gold value. I learned from this that I was collector and appreciated the enjoyment of time spent. I have sold some fill in coins and duplicates and received more than expected on ebay. My question to those who know much more than I do, Is the wide spread exposure of ebay the reason for the sudden demand and increase of prices on coins? How long will it last? Enjoy while we can.

i am new to coins, but I think the rise in interest correlates with the rise in the price of silver and gold over the past 5 years.

LOL... if you are getting a premium on coins right now, you should keep selling because you are apparently the only one.

Not being a coin dealer or seller only a collector I found that when I had a need to pay unexpected bills the amount offered to me by sellers was only a fraction of what I thought the coins were worth. A friend sold items on ebay and he sold them for me. After a 15% sale and listing fee I still realized much more than I was offered. I think that the exposeure that one receives with ready buyers creates the market we have now. It may not be Red Book prices but much more than you can expect from a dealer or coin shop. Many of my friends shop on line for items and generally they are well pleased. I hope it continues to create a group of new collectors that will enjoy the hobby.

Coin Chaser: We seem to have a very similar profile, both in experience and time. I do have some nice ancient gold, most of it sourced from Spink's in London, and I have a complete set of the Roman Imperial Catalogue. (RIC)

I am finding that prices for numismatic material are holding up better in Australia than in the U.S. Oz's economy is doing better comparatively than the U.S. economy.

Even though the numismatic market is far larger in the U.S. than Oz, the average U.S. collector, it seems to me, has less to spend on his hobbies at the present time.

I am finding that U.S. material is bringing higher prices in Oz.

I do have a few nice U.S. commemoratives.

Hi SEL 691 Wow you are way ahead of me. The RIC and being able to use it to help identfy your coins is a big plus. I have quite a few Romans that have not been attributed. My granddaughter helps me with these as my eyesight and memory for the roman letters is not real dependable. We use Handbook of Roman Coins by Van Meter, and the internet. Very time consuming. My real love is you S Commemortives. I had a financial crisis and my collection met the need. What a wonderful feeling. In previous posts I mentioned the selling. I now have a lot of empty slots to work on but now am able. I am starting an inventory of all the coins I still have. I realize that being a slow typer this will I will have to dedicate a certain amount of time each day if I expect to complete it. This is real work. I will be ready to list some items on ebay soon and will include Aus. NZ, and some parts of Europe. Taking the advice of a long time Eba yer there are some regions that you might not want sell to. Well we seem to have a lot in common. Good Luck
