I need some info about the peg leg Ike dollars. What is the cause? (die polishing maybe?)Do they have a big collector base? Any premium value? I'm posting a pix of the 1972 D I just found. Curiosity rules.

Numismo - I think you are correct in your assumption of the die polishing as the cause. Yours definitely looks like a peg leg to me, but I'm no expert. AS to the collector based, when I posted a pic of a proof peg leg Ike that I have, they gave me the following link to a group of "Ike" collectors....Ikegroup.org.

Hope this helps.

In looking at your Ike, I'm not sure your coin is a peg leg.

It looks like there may be a slight serif on the bottom of the left leg, although pics are diffucult to discern compared to having the coin in hand. I could be wrong.

Here is a pic of a 72D Peg leg I have for comparison.

Peg legs do have a premium, some more than others. * Check out the Ike groups price list etc.*

The big one to look for is the 1971S "Blue Ike" Uncirculated Peg Leg.

I'm still looking for that one, but I do have some real nice 72D's and a real nice 74D Major Peg Leg.

They are fun to collect etc.

Chuck.

You're right chuckster. It looks like a bit of serif. I have others though that have more pronounced serifs. Thanks for the link. I'll check it out.

Peg Legs are fun to hunt for...each one is a little different!Checkout my 1974-S Clad Proof Peg leg...very hard to find these babies! Pic makes it look more flared than it really is, due to funky LED scope. In hand, it is quite square, with no serif residue.
