Fort Worth 295 Error

"In order to understand the FW295 error, it helps to know some background about the Bureau of Engraving and Printing's operation. The BEP prints U.S. currency in two locations: its main facility in Washington, DC, and the newer Western Currency Facility in Fort Worth, TX. Notes printed in Fort Worth can be identified by two distinctive features: A small "FW" facility mark appears just before the face plate number, and the back plate number is printed in large type. (The plate numbers, which identify the specific printing plates which produced a given note, are found in the lower right area of each side of the note on most denominations.)

During the production of Series 1995 $1 notes, however, one printing plate was engraved incorrectly. Back plate #295, intended for use at the Fort Worth facility, was accidentally engraved with the smaller-size plate number usually used for Washington, DC's plates. The error was not noticed at the BEP, and plate #295 was used in production in Fort Worth for several months.

As a result, all Series 1995 $1 notes printed with this back plate will have the "FW" facility mark on the face, but a small-size plate number "295" on the back--a combination which should not occur. These notes are now known as Fort Worth 295 errors."

Is there any premium to these notes? Shouldn't they be considered a "mule" instead of an error? Has anyone found some of these, if so how common are they?

Never found one but I did buy one a while back which was misclassified on ebay rather cheaply (it was graded as well). I think they "were" rather common back in the day. Hence you see the low price. You can get chcu notes for less than $25 if you are patient.

It's considered an error cos of the "font size" used for FW prints and is considered an "engraving error".

Considerable research has been done on the #295 plate 'errors' by the Long Island Currency Club several years ago.

Normally for the 1995 notes, the eastern districts (A through E) are printed in Washington, while the western districts (G through L) are printed in Fort Worth. Atlanta (F) is split between the two facilities. On a routine basis, the COPE-PAK equipment at one of the facilities is down for routine maintenance. During this time, the western districts are printed at Washington, or eastern districts are printed at Fort Worth.

The #295 notes were printed with the Washington check number size of .8mm rather than the 1.2mm check numbers used at Fort Worth. The #295 check number was used for 12 blocks of the G,H,I,J,K, and L districts; namely the following: GM,GN,G*, HE, IF,IG,IH, JF, KI,KJ, LW,LX. The G* is rare with the #295 check, and IH, KI, and LX are fairly scarce, but the rest of the blocks are all common.

Since each facility creates its own plates, is it not possible that these Forth Worth notes were actually printed in Washington?

So is the 295 error only for the 1995 $1 note?

Is the 295 back plate still only used for Washington?

Because I found a 295 back plate on a FW 2009 $1 note Block K-G.

Let me know if anyone has any idea. Thanks!

I don't believe they consider it a mule. It has a small premium attached to it, and as always the condition of the note is important to its value. I have several, here's one.
