I picked up some rolls of Quarters, Dimes, Nickles, and Pennies earlier this week. Now that I have gone through them all I was left with the impression that the newer coins don't seem to hold up to circulation as well as the older ones.

Is it just me? Since I am new to collecting coins I am curious to what some of the vets around here think.

As for nickels...I'll unequivocally agree, the new front facing design sucks for keeping clean examples.

I agree with DylansDad, modern nickels don't seem to be struck as deeply (possibly to save on dies) when searching nickels you can tell what era it is by the depth of the strike...

Sum it up as...

Things aren't made like they use to be, and that goes for coins too...

Yeah it was the Nickles that stuck out at first. But even the newer pennies seem to not hold up as well. I say that but please remember I have only search through a small number of rolls; so it is kind of my first impression.

I have to agree on the quality issue. Today's coins just don't seem to hold up as well as the earlier coins. I have seen so many Statehood Quarters that looked like they were made 100 years ago, yet they were made in the last 10 years.

Of course I think that's with alot of stuff these days. None of the newer stuff lasts like the older stuff did.

Completely agree! I just received a Yosemite quarter in circulation and it already looked 5 years old.

I have really noticed a difference between 2009 and 2010 lincolns. The 2010's are not nearly as detailed as the 2009's. Is this a new trend or just a poorly struck year?

TheHocko, the obverse of the cent has changed slightly in its design and relief since 1909. The 2010 cent possesses the original obverse design which is closer to Brennan's original sculpture. I read about this in some numismatic article, but I just did a search on Google and I can't seem to find it!

That was what the mint said back before the 2010 cents came out, that the design was a return to the original Brenner design. Of course the law that mandated the 2009 cents also require THEM to be made with the same original Brenner design and relief. They didn't do it. the 2010 is closer to the 1909 design, but the relief is much lower and possibly even lower than the 2009 cents.

I guess that makes sense, will this cause the new shields to wear more than say the 2009's. Will they wear something like the early lincolns did?

And you know what really ticks me off about that quality of our new coinage? Every time I see what I think is a really old coin in my change I get all excited and then notice it's a 2002 or even later dated coin. I've grabbed Nickels that looked like they were from the 50's and they turn out to be in the 90's. And maybe it's me but Dimes always look like they are brand new and they turn out to be old. Those stay shinny as if they were only a few years old.
And the Cents are almost a joke. I've seen some that looked like the first coin ever made on Earth and it was only a few years old.

If the quality is so bad on new US coins, then you can bet how hard it will be to find MS examples in the future.
