How do you figure out what denomination this coin is? Is it a 2 Skilling, 2 mark or 4 mark? Can you only tell by size?

Also, what do you think it is worth? I was not able to find an ebay or Heritage auction for any Norway coins of this year.

This coin was only issued for two years 1725 and 1726, it's 2 Marks KM# 221, the weight should be 8.990g and is .8330 silver. I'd grade it at F-12. Value @$450.

The only way to tell is by the weight and size. This type was also minted as a 4 Mark (1 Krone)with a weight of 22.270g. and .6720 silver with a mintage of 103.000, value of @$100 in fine condition

By the pics in Krause, there are slight differences between the 2 and 4 mark - particularly in the spacing of the letters and the shape and details of the crowns. Based on those differences, I'd say this coin is a 4 mark.

All of the examples with this design currently visible on CoinArchives are 4-mark coins.

And in case you were wondering what the words translated to: both legends are in Latin.

D.G. REX DAN NOR VAN GOT expands to Dei Gratia Rex Daniae Norvegiae Vandalorum Gotorum, with translates to "by grace of God King of Denmark, Norway, the Wends (Vandals) and the Goths.

Dominus Mihi Adiutor is a quote from the Latin Bible (Psalm 118:6-7 and Hebrews 13:6): "The Lord is my help". It was the national motto under King Frederick IV. In Denmark, as in other Scandinavian countries, each monarch chooses a new national motto on their succession, which is why different monarchs feature different mottoes on their coins.
