I opened a new roll of 2010-P Native American dollars I bought from the mint's direct ship program....The box was stamped 03-17-2010....Right away I noticed one of the dollars was much darker than the others. It appears to be struck on a bronze planchet? Or maybe the shiny gold was not applied to this planchet? I know these pictures are terrible...I took them with my iPhone....I will get a high res scan tomorrow....I took the pictures with a normal dollar on the left, and the bronze(?) one on the right. If anybody has any info that would be great!

Also, In the last pictures you can see streaks in the metal that remind me of some older Lincoln Cents....

it could be missing a clad layer, it would have a bright red appearance if it did.

In these blurry pictures, the coin on the right seems like it's Satin Finish.

Satin Finish Dollars and Quarters have been occasionally reported to be
found in business strike bags and rolls.

I cannot see much of anything with those blurry photos. If the coin were missing a manganese layer, it would be lighter than normal since the manganese is clad to a copper core and not plated.

Could also just a "toned" piece. Could be a planchet that was improperly cleaned after it was annealed. Frankly with out having a metallurgical analysis done you really can't say what if anything is wrong. All you can really say is that it is darker than normal.

If the coin is heated for too long it could darken like the "Black Nickels" did.

Conder101,
If I send the coin in to PCGS, will they perform the metallurgical analysis as part of their authentication? Thanks!

In the new pics, it looks somewhat like an "Experimental Rinse" variety.

If you just send it in for regular grading, no. But they may offer the service for an extra fee. I know NGC does. I believe it's $75 extra.
