Hey all,

Today I got a series 2001 $20 note out of the ATM machine. As I'm sure most of you know, it's the first of the "big head" design notes, before they colorized them. It has the Marin/O'Neill signatures.

There is absolutely nothing special about it (not a star, not a fancy serial, etc) Condition is about average for it's age.

I'm thinking of trying to hang onto it, though, due to this particular design not being printed anymore. It's been several months since I've seen one of these in circulation, since 99.9% of the time I see the colorized (series 2004 and up) notes.

What do you guys think? Spend? Keep? Am I being a fool hanging onto this ordinary $20 bill.

Thanks!

If you are able to save it, it's not like you can't change your mind later and spend it. It's like money in the bank, and at current interest rates it will earn the same amount too!

Thanks for the response, Nickelman.

For now, I've set it aside. I'll probably end up spending it, though, as it's not really anything special. If it were a star, low sn, etc, that would be a different story, but such is not the case.

What I would really like to find is a small portrait note. I know a few are still floating around out there, as I've seen folks post that they've found some still in circulation. I have yet to be that fortunate, though.

As a cashier I see quite a few of those and pretty much ignore them besides checking the serial. I do come across the older "smaller portrait" design from time to time and pull them for the heck of it. Have 5 of them - 1969C, 1985, (2) 1993, and a 1995. Not bad for only collecting for a few months I guess.

Yeah, that's the thing. I don't have a job that involves handling a lot of cash, on a daily basis. So, something that may seem to be a bit of a rarity to me, is probably no big deal to somebody who is a cashier, a bank teller, etc.

I'm sure there are still quite a bit of those early "big head" notes circulating about, so I won't feel bad spending the one that I have.

When it comes to the newer notes, say, anything post 1995, if it isn't a star, or doesn't have a neat serial, back out into the wild it goes.

Thanks for the input, guys.

I'm not sure where you are getting your information from, but internet sites are definitely not good places.

If the fact that it is a 2001 note is the reason that you even 'consider' saving this note, I would have to disagree with you.

Here is one of the very first big head $20 notes, and it has different signatures and series than yours.

Series-2001-$20.

Series-2001-$20.

Even though this post is ancient, I would like to say that I never see the pre-colored "Big Head" $20's anymore. If I do find them, it's because the bank pulls them aside for me. I did find a 2001 $20 at a gas station this past winter (Jan 2021) and made sure to get it back in change. That was my first one I seen in circulation since Sept 2019. I always deal with cash and always keep my eyes open when the tills open. Even when the bank checks the straps I very seldom find them. I will find a "Small Head" $20 first before a "Big Head" one. A few years ago I did see them more often, but now it's pretty tough to find them. Granted that it's been roughly 18 years since they last printed the pre-colored $20's. Glad I sent some aside several years back.

Large portrait, non-colorized $20s include series 1996, 1999 and 2001. In all, over 12 billion were printed. Many have already reached their end-of-life and have been destroyed, but I'm guessing you'll be able to find these for decades to come with no problem.
