I've seen more and more slabbed coins with a label of a famous hoard or collection sell for more than a regular slab of same date. I know nobody knows what the future will bring as for the value of these hoards/collections, but how have the ones of past held up. Have they retained their value or have they been reduced to just another slabbed coin? The GSA's seem to be doing well but what of the others? In your opinion is it worth the added money for the label?

It's very hard to say. Some individual collections were so famous that the pedigree on the holder makes a difference. The GSA hoard was highly publicized at the time.

I have also seen a lot of pedigrees that don't mean anything. For the most part, NGC (I'm not sure about PCGS) will put any pedigree that you want on a coin. I sold two gold coins with the Bank of Australia pedigree on them. These coins were from the gold liquidation in Australia. It made no difference at all in the price.

I don't think there are any hard and fast rules as to whether a specific pedigree will make a difference in value or not.

I guess it depends on how well it is played up. I was just wondering. I bought a 1882 cc fitzgerald collection for the price of a regular slab. Cracked it out looks better in my album. Thanks Susan

Newbie opinion here. I am seeing boxes and COA for GSA morgans selling on ebay. So, someone buys the box and COA, slips in a less than stellar Morgan, and sells for a premium. This is the kind of shady dealing that makes it very hard for a newbie to make sound decisions.
Its not just for GSAs either. I have seen boxes for mint issued proofs and the like. I am very thankful for this board and all the knowledge that is here to help newbies, like me, not get taken to the bank. (unless it is for BU coins at face value) :)

Also, people who sell those boxes make the auctions private, so someone can't "avoid" the person who intends deceit.

PCGS pedigrees some registry sets. Here is a cut/paste from there site.

A valuable pedigree. In the rare coin market a pedigree is a contributing factor in the pride of ownership and value of the coin. Coins from famous collections such as Eliasberg, Norweb, Garrett, etc., usually command a premium in the marketplace. If you participate in the PCGS Set RegistrySM program your set may qualify for the free pedigree service. The free pedigree service policy is as follows:

The set must be 100% complete.
The set must be in the top 5 in the Registry.
Sets with less than 10 coins may be pedigreed if warranted. The decision will be that of PCGS experts.
The Registry member is responsible for shipping and handling costs.
The fee for pedigrees for upgrades to your set submitted after the initial pedigree is $5 a coin ($20 a coin for coins graded MS or Proof 70.) PCGS will not pedigree duplicate coins. You must submit both the upgraded coin and the coin it will be replacing. The coin that will no longer remain in your set will be reholdered without the pedigree and returned to you along with the newly pedigreed coin. Your set must remain 100% complete and in the top five to qualify.

To confirm that your set qualifies for the free Pedigree Service, contact customer service at setregistry@collectors.com. Then mail with your coins a PCGS submission form and a printed page from the set registry that lists your set in the top five.
Please note: Pedigrees can be up to 22 characters in length. If the coin has a variety designation (i.e. Type 1, Type 2, etc.), this is included as part of the total character count. Please note on your submission form if you would like your coins sequentially numbered. PCGS no longer certifies coins with green inserts.

and I guess NGC will let you put almost anything you want on a slab. Someone was raising money for the ANA yn program recently and sold these on e-bay.
There R rated so click link at your own risk.

the famous madmarty weenie coin! and about your concern quickstudy, the GSA Morgans are more than just a box and COA, there are certain holders the GSA used as well and as far as I know those slabs aren't available anywhere to make it where the public can be fooled

I'm not much of a pedigree kinda guy. Maybe as my knowledge and collection expands they will come into play. So much reading and so little time. Hard to keep up with it all.
