Actually, I think the mint has produced several piedfort coins..........the '96 Toonie, several crystal snowflake coins, maybe others as well.

I ordered two of these last night, should start shipping in October.

I do believe the coins you mention are called high relief not piedforts because they lack the thickness...If you read the full description.. the mint is referring to it as the first sliver piedfort ever minted...

Hi Koin Hunter, what the mint is saying is "Our FIRST pure silver piedfort coin featuring Maple Leaf design.", meaning it's the first 99.99% pure silver piedfort coin.

The '96 Toonie I have is definitely a piedfort coin, the documentation calls it a "1996 Proof $2 Piedfort and Bank Notes Set". I'd need to make a trip to the bank to check the thickness of all the crystal raindrop coins, but I'm almost positive that I read that at least one of them is thicker than a standard $20 silver coin.

Sounds like you have a very nice collection of commemorative coins Hawk...Anyway..even if theres other R.C.M. Piedforts.. The new S.M.L piedfort is very nice and most coin dealer sites are calling it a recommended buy...So...like you I ordered a few too...

Probably not much of a piedfort if the diameter has only been reduced 4mm, while the
weight has remained almost the same. I used to have the 1996 $2 piedfort, now THAT
was a thick chunky coin. If you're going to pay $80 for an ounce of Ag, my only
hope is that you already have at least a few hundred ounces of silver bullion
tucked away.

Koin Hunter, congrats on your purchase, it's a very nice coin.

I've got a fairly nice collection of commemorative silver dollars in both BU (1970-2010) and Proof (1981-2011), as well as DD Proof sets from 1971 to present. I know this may not be to everyone's taste, but I enjoy collecting them.

1cent, I'm on my way to your several hundred ounce mark as I'm thinking about re-starting my collecting of SML's. I've already got the 10oz 1998 SML as well as about 18 regular SML's from various years.

I hear you Hawk...like you ...I also enjoy collecting the commemorative coins..If I just wanted to invest in silver I would buy Bars or S.M.L's... collector coins are an art form..and most mark a point in Canadian History...For me it's not always about the money...or the investment..Some people have a need to collect things and I chose commemorative coins...

KH, it wasn't my intent to rag on anyone who is going to buy one of these, it just irritates me to no end that the mint gets away with charging the premiums they do.
They would still make money on them at $49.95, but they push it to $80 just because
they know they can get it.

No problem.. 1cent...I didn't think you were ragging..yes it would be nice if they would keep the price lower..but most luxury items in the world today are never cheap.Thats why I collect silver...when I would rather collect GOLD.

I could have bought the piedfort twonie (coin only) locally for a hundred beans but since it's not really my collecting path I passed it up... well, I'd still be on the fence about the choice, but it's a fancy coin for sure. I post the following ebay item link because of the great pictures and specs of said item...
