It is a small Perth Mint silver (plated?) medal from a bullion set or a small mint medallion.

I don't collect bullion coins generally, but the Perth Mint produces them and markets them in a big way. It is core business for them. However I did acquire a platinum 1 Oz. Koala about 10 years ago, cost about $450, bullion value now about $1,850. Their minting standards are very high.

Although I live in Sydney, I visited Perth Mint a couple of years ago, and the explanation of their activities was fascinating. They have lots of bullion coins available for sale. I even handled a 400 oz. gold bar.

A major source of their gold over the last 100 years has been from the Super Pit, which is an open cut gold mine not far from Kalgoorlie. The scale of that hole in the ground is mind blowing. The size of the mining operation rivals that of the old iron ore open cut mines in the U.S.

The apparent size of the 200 ton dump trucks which haul gold ore from that hole is that they like ants. However, these muthers of trucks are huge. They have 1500 hp diesels in them, and are really diesel electric. They have DC electric motors in each of their wheel hubs.

Google 'Super Pit' to find more of this mine. It can also be seen fairly easily from Google Maps.

Log onto the Perth Mint site. It makes for an interesting browse, even if you are not into bullion coins.
