Speculation time. While we are still very much interested in varieties such as the 1891 1 cent leaf and date sizes, years from now - 20 years, 50 years, 100 years - will people be interested in the 1 cent planchet varieties we've seen in recent years? I'm asking specifically with the more scarce varieties of the 2006 1 cent coins in mind.

Its really hard to speculate on this. Personally I believe the value of pennies in particular will go up once they get rid of the penny in 2012. I am hoarding them, including varieties.

Here is my reason for asking - I have a spare 2006 no MM magnetic cent that I could part with for a few hundred bucks. The population estimates of this coin vary widely, but I would say they definitely do qualify as "rare".

Essentially, I'm not sure if we will determine that the coins are more prevalent than everyone realizes, and if anyone will care about planchet varieties in 20 years. If I can sell it for a few hundred now but a few grand or more in 10 or 20 years I might just hang onto it.

Its always a gamble... to sell, or not to sell... In out world, that is the real question. I am a collector. I do not sell.

I generally don't, but I don't mind parting with one to purchase another scarce coin I don't have

The 2006 NM M is a very popular variety but I am not consider it is rare.It is very scarce! It is always
nice to own one, especially they are popular.I think it will maintain his value all the time but it wouldn't going to moon money.

When I first found this variety I thought I was rich.
But nobody would touch it on ebay uncertified.
It was probably a 62 or so but I sold it uncertified on the bay for 100 bucks.
Found another one, about a 60, sold it for 100 bucks as well.
I should have hung on to them but I got some nice keydates with the money, so I feel OK about it.

Well ultimately I need these questions answered and I don't think there are really clear cut answers for them.

First, is the 2006 magnetic cent overpriced, or will it continue to rise in the future?
Second, will anyone care about planchet varieties in 30 years when my kids are ready for university?

Once I can find an answer to these - and I'm not sure that I can - I can reasonably decide if I want to sell them now or sit on them for a bit.
