How can the mint warrant charging $2358 for this set of coins? http://www.mint.ca/store/coin/14kar...0-prod980016Why do people pay the crazy price? Is this something only a dedicated collector would seek. It just seems to me that the mint can make any coin they want and then charge an arm and a leg for it.I know that its gold but holy moly folks, thats a big asking price.

So they can lower taxes up there? Or maybe to get you hotter than a wet hen so you use less energy this winter!
Obviously a typo, unless they're the size of Toronto manhole covers.

As much as I like Canada's coins, I just don't get the RCM "collector" products. At least they make it easy to calculate bullion (actual) value: 28 grams of gold or 0.9 troy ounces.

It amazes me even more that whilst not appreciated by die hard collectors the same topic keeps coming back... The RCM is out of stock - so it would appear there is a slight demand for these items.

The "Out of stock" could just mean that the coins have not been produced yet or are not ready to be released, just like the Piedfort Maple Leaf (also noted as out of stock until a day or two ago).

Here's what one coin dealer says about these beautiful coins....not my words...c/p from web site... Investment Note
The mintage limit for each coin in this set is only 1,000, making them truly rare and meaning that only that total number of people worldwide can ever own them. This is a tiny mintage for such relatively inexpensive coins - most larger, more expensive gold proofs have a higher mintage as well. In that each portrays maples leaves, the dominant symbol of Canada (as found on the Canadian national flag), we recommend securing your position immediately.
I sure wish I could afford them...I'd order them in a minute

At least with the gold coins, sooner or later the intrinsic value will surpass the issue price. Gold would have to double for that to happen, but it's been rising at close to 20% per year for a decade, so it's by no means unlikely.

Thanks for the clarification canadian coins, I'm not particularly up to date with the RCM gold coins as most of them are out of my price range. I think the only gold coin I have in my collection is the '67 $20 gold piece.

Bahhh!! All this talk about rarity is just hogwash if you ask me! For crying out loud...I could go out into my garage and make a hat out of a Lobster and a Stick and it would be really rare! Don't mean it's going to be worth a whole bunch does it! The mint seems to be preying on stupid people who just have to have the shiney new thing!

We are all weird for collecting small round shiny things. If someone can afford to purchase some rarer pieces that the mint makes.....then so be it. I see no fault with them or the mint. It's no different then a car company only making 100 of a super rare sports car.

Am I reading that right, $500+ for 12 grams of 14 carat gold. That's about 6.7 grams of gold. That's a steep premium for shiny things. I'll have the lobster thanks.

Do you think a Rembrandt is worth the canvas it's painted on...no of course not...just like beautiful art in the form of a coin...who knows what a man is willing to pay...beauty is in the eye of the beholder...

Now now, lets calm down. The real question here is "Is the mint making coins and just putting ridiculous prices on them and hope they can pawn them off as rare or collectible by only minting so many?" Who is the guy that decides the price! We should be after him!!
