Hi everyone it's me BB. I have one question my sister who was the only one who gave me coins for my birthday because she knows I go crazy for these coins gave me three steel cents which she bought from littleton coins. The thing is they say reprocessed 1943 steel cents on it can anyone shed some light on to this because I just realized it and I never heard of reprocessed coins.

Any help will be appreicated for I am student who wishes to know more about this

The steel cents tend to tarnish/rust readily and it is uncommon to find them with nice surfaces. Reprocessed just means that they have been replated with a layer of zinc to give them a nice shiny surface again. These can be distinguished from the real thing by looking at the luster- a real BU steely will have nice luster while a reprocessed one will just be shiny.

I'm glad you brought this subject up. I was also unaware of reprocessed steelies until I saw them this week on the teevee.

Now I wonder if the shiny 43's I bought for 20c per are original or not. Are there telltale signs used to identify them? Are they worth more than a cent?

TIA

Hi Shatsi

There is a difference between shine and luster,, reprocessed cents seldom have luster but they are shiny,,This is due to the plating covering the microscopic concentric lines that are what cause true luster on Mint state coins.

reprocessed can also have a dimpled surface, or a bubbly appearance(for lack of a better term) they also sometimes show a shadow of the lettering and numbers.

For the most part "steel" pennies don't have much of a premium. That being said, the reprocessed pennies do have a value as you paid $ (value) for them.

Buffaloboy when they punched out the planchets for the steelies they made a mistake. They plated the sheet first and then punched the planchets from the sheet so the edges never had the zinc coating in the first place and rusted. Your coins are not worthless. You can have reprocessed steelies or rusted steelies. Most, I think probably have been reprocessed which means they are not original but that doesn't make them worthless.

Yes, steel cents are about the only coins that can be plated (replated in this case) and still retain most of their value since it is so commonplace.
