This works pretty well. Just make sure you're not using a colored lampshade ;)

Voila..... The green felt pad on top of the screw is one of those things you buy at the furniture store for the legs of your dining room table so they don't scratch your hardwood floors. They're extremely soft and self stick. About $2 for a card of 12. That's how you get the background to fall off like this...

If you're worried about balance, use one of those tripods from a pizza delivery - the ones that hold up the center of the pizza box - with the felt on it.

True, but they will ony work with larger coins like halves and dollars because they're larger than the top of those things.

I wouldn't know about coins smaller than a Morgan.

Ah, So I do in fact rest the coin on the screw.
Ok, think I've got it.
However, woke up today to find out that one of my cats ate my usb connector cable, so I can't upload photos. Need to figure out how to replace it and in bulk. They will do it again.
Also, got my tri-pod in the mail. So the ate cord couldn't have come at a worse time.

Is the "macro" setting a must? I'm not sure I have one.

Its possible to get fair pictures without a macro if your camera has a good optical zoom,, My success was very limited with my old camera which did not have a macro setting,, what type camera do you have ? maybe we can find out if your camera has a macro or not. Rick

Low Light, macro Mode, and a STILL camera(tripod). I also like blue backgrounds for gold, and black for silver. MM

One other thing is the power of a good photo editor to make a bad photo look good. Below, 1 is a photo I had on the hard disk. Not too attractive.... BUT, with a little editing magic....you get photo 2 and 3 MM 1: 2: 3:
