Do I need to remove them from this type of holder? I'm heading over to my sister's house later to use her scanner and while some of my coins are slabbed and graded those in this type of holder can be removed if need be.

It can help. We wouldn't want to lower our opinion of your coin because of a scratch, stain or deformation on the plastic, rather than on the coin itself.

If you can take pics that good with a camera, that would probably be better than a scanner.

Maybe I will just take pictures of my silver but all the pictures I've taken of my gold coins aren't so good. Is scanning slabbed and graded gold worth the effort seeing as they are already graded?

It looks like you used the flash and held the camera by hand, correct? If so, that is part of your problem. Macro photos of coins need a tripod/copy stand and good overhead lighting.

Yeah, biokem.. Hand held but no flash. I had a light source over to the left. I knew I was doing it wrong but I'm not set up for coin photo's. I'll scan a few tonight and look into getting a tripod/copy stand. Thank you.

If your doing this for just opinions on grades, I think your photos are sufficient enough as is. Unless you think you need fantastic blow ups of every portion of each coin, for just a possible grade by this forum, your doing OK.
