We can no longer edit our original post. What was the reasoning behind this change? There are times when editing the original post which contains a "changing" list comes in handy. I'm not complaining -- just asking why the change.

The policy was implemented to stop three perceived problems:
1. In the BST forums, a tiny minority of members were doing minimal edits to their OP just to bump their sales thread to the top of the list. Sure, people can still bump their threads by making a new post in it, but if we see a persistent bump-o-potamus who refuses to cease and desist, we can "de-bump" their threads easily just by deleting their bump posts.
2. We had a few instances of ex-members who, before they left, went through every recent post they made and systematically deleted "their" information they had posted, purely out of spite. It tended to make those threads useless as future reference material. We could (and sometimes did) go through and manually un-delete everything, but it's a lot of work and we'd rather the deletion didn't happen in the first place.
3. Sometimes, people would say incorrect things or ask questions which in hindsight they thought were downright stupid. So when they were corrected or answered, they would edit their posts to make themselves look less stupid. We'd rather they didn't do that. We don't think there are "stupid questions" - there are probably many many more people out there searching the Internet looking for the answer to that same question - and we certainly don't want the "stupid" members to make our other forum members look like idiots by their actions.
We realise a tiny minority of misbehaving members have provoked this change, causing a nuisance to the vast majority of civilized members, especially for a few members that are greatly inconvenienced due to the way they usually formatted their sales threads, contests and so forth. I personally used to edit the OP in my wantlist thread whenever I updated it. I have Moderator Superpowers and could still do that to my thread if I wanted to, but I choose not to give myself an advantage not available to others. I'll simply change the way I do things - probably by posting a new wantlist thread each time I update it from now on.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Just to clarify, is there a time limit before this feature kicks in? I ask only because I'll type a post, click spellcheck, then hit the submit button. then I re-read the post and find errors that I missed the first time, like word spacing, punctuation, or things the spellchecker missed, like typing "fro" when I meant to type "for", or "form" when I meant "from". So I click the "edit" button to fix it. I have not had an issue doing this yet, but just asking to clarify the rule.

SHAFTA9a is correct, the restriction kicks in after 24 hours.

I would also like to point out that the new editing limits here are much more generous than the majority of forums. On most busy forums like this one, you get an hour and that's it. Once everyone gets over the initial change it will likely be shortened more.
While Sap's reasons are all true, the main reason this is done on most all busy forums is for accountability. When there is more accountability, the are more responsible posts. To put it bluntly, members don't get to act like a jerk while running high on current emotion, then delete and/or deny days, weeks, or even or months later. Members need to know there is accountability and responsibility for their words before they post them.

Okay, thanks. I usually catch them right away. If I don't see it after 24 hours, I deserve to look dumb.
