I just bought this as an AU coin. I cant decided if its been cleaned or not. I dont think it was and I've had split opnions on it. It does not appear to have scratches on it. For $47 did I get burned and should I return it b/c it was cleaned (if it was)?

The thing I like the most about this coin is its really easy to tell if its been cleaned. With such large flat devices and surfaces, and dulling/cleaning/wear becomes very apparent. looking at the chest of the eagle and Thigh on the Obverse I would say this is an easy AU, maybe only an AU-50 but still.

As for cleaning, with these pics its hard to tell, but go with the basics, Is the luster strong or dull, and can you find hairlines.

Since you paid XF money for it, id say well done. If its AU Cleaned/dipped XF money is about right. If its a little more worn than AU, you got what you paid for. I think it was a good purchase.

hi-res pics would help though.

I see no hairlines in the fields but maybe one or two but I thiny they are circulation scratches as they are random and VERY few, I count maybe 1 or 2 on the whole coin. It may have been dipped, but that I cant tell either. I agree that it is AU-50 atleast... in hand probally just shy of MS-60. I'm happy with it even if it has been dipped if it is a good price, which it sounds like it was.
