Hi all, I have a (I think) half gold sovereign, which has been passed down by family. I'm interested to know how much it might be worth. I live in NZ, but after researching on the internet, believe this coin came from Australia because of the S mintmark. See below scans. Will be interested in any info

G'day HiDef,
S mintmark is for Sydney, prices from Macdonalds 13th ed. is for fine,$100 and vf $175.
Dollar amounts are in Australian dollars.
Are you sure it is a 1/2 sovereign, and not a sovereign.
Weight for a 1/2 sov. is 3.9940 grams. and the size is 19mm.

Just checked the diameter, and it is 19mm, so I presume it's a half sovereign. Thanks for the info

Yes, I'd agree with gnome. It's in the F-VF range valued between $150 - $225. Prices in the McD are currently out of date and you will NEVER find this coin for $100 any more, because there is around that much in it in melt alone.
The obverse looks a little curious to me. What do you think can account for that yellow colouring in the top right quadrant of the obverse, as though someone might have tried to clean it? The obverse looks a little scratchy to me, as well. Don't know what might have happened there.
