This is a 1961 Jefferson nickel from the Philadelphia mint. The details are great, it has some steps. The fields are nice and smooth. There is a partial fingerprint over the dome.
It's tough to capture the color in scans or photos, but it is a dark gun-metal gray.
I'm certainly not an expert, but it does look lightly sintered. Most of the "Black Beauties" were found in the late 50s and were UNCs. After market damage can cause a number of discolorations.
I totally "get it" that environmental stuff can cause similar discoloration. The details on this are really sharp. The color is almost like someone rubbed pencil graphite all over it. It has this sort of "black luster" that's really interesting.
