jprine Pillar of the Community United States 1599 Posts	Posted 09/26/2010 9:55 pm I got a Texas quarter in change today that really looks odd. It looks like a proof, very brilliant, lots of luster. The odd thing is that the edge shows no copper at all. It looks like all silver. Am I wrong or was the only Texas Washingtons silver minted with a S mint mark? Report this Post to the Staff

My Brother in law received a proof silver Washington State Quarter in change from Taco Bell a couple of years ago. sgtbigred Valued Member United States 83 Posts	Posted 09/26/2010 10:45 pm Only silver issued American States quarters were minted in San Francisco. If it has an S mint mark, then you have silver. If it is a D or P then it is clad. If the field is mirror like and the Washington looks frosted and it has an S mint mark, then you would have a proof. Mind you not all proofs have to be cameos (deep frosted highlights). Report this Post to the Staff

coppercoins Pillar of the Community United States 7629 Posts	Posted 09/27/2010 4:58 pm Umm, not necessarily so... Just because a quarter has an S mintmark does NOT mean it's silver. They minted both the silver AND clad. The difference is very obvious without a scale. The color of the metal is much different and the sound it makes on a table is very different too. Took another very close look at the edge, there is absolutely no copper showing anywhere and the luster is brilliant. Hopefully latter in the week I can get some pics. Report this Post to the Staff
